Dear Chris,

I forget that Cavalier breeders don't know the connotations of the Stud
Review. This was an annual issue of the American Cocker Review that
showcased the studs from all over the country, listed their pedigrees,
photo, and fee. For someone to have a subscription to the magazine meant
that they were usually pretty serious about showing Cockers. It wasn't
something that your backyard breeder would even know about. Also, if the
bitch owner went to the trouble to contact one of the stud owners, you could
be assured that it wasn't just for puppies to sell. They wouldn't go to that
much trouble when they could breed to a nearby dog for much less money and
hassle. At that time, I think that the usual fee for stud service locally
was about $50, but fees for dogs in the Stud Review were about $150 or so.
Somewhere in there, it's been a while so my numbers may be off, but the
percentage of difference isn't.

All the best,
Susan Cochran
