This is somewhat true--but believe me, if they don't deliver they get *fired* and a new one is hired. Free agents are like subcontractors. I am building a home starting in May or June and although they will tell me what price they are going to charge, I will be their employer and decide whether or not to hire them and if they don't deliver--I will be the one to fire them as well. If a handler doesn't win, he/she won't remain a handler for long! Professional handlers should just plain not be allowed. They have and always will bring the quality of dogs down because they need to win. They are *under the gun* and they will do what is necessary to maintain employment/win. If someone can't show their own dogs--get a friend--not a professional handler. I guarantee that if professional handlers disappeared, the quality of the dogs that finish would rise significantly! It should be the dogs that matter, not the win.
