Hi Anne,
John was only saying that in his opinion a pet cavalier can be trimmed to
rid them of that excessive neuter coat. He was in no way supporting the
trimming and overgrooming of show dogs. Many pet and show people keep their
older dogs trimmed down to ease the amount of grooming and to make the dogs
more comfortable in hot weather. His instructions were intended to show how
it should be done so that the dog retained much of it's cavalier look instead
of loooking like a shorn sheep. There's something sad about seeing a heavily
coated pet made to lie around and suffer in hot weather because of a
misguided belief that its a sin to trim a pet. The dogs comfort should come
first.
That being said, a show dog should be shown in all of it's natural
glory.
