I am new to the list but have had experience with de-barking. I have
Pointers de-barked with 3 out of 4 being a great success with no or quieter
bark, 1 had the vocal folds grow back (scaring) and was re-done and is good
now. I also had one Papillion done many years ago with a really good
result. The dogs that were de-barked suffered no ill effect and thought
that they were barking with all the rest of the dogs. The operation is
successful if the dog has a pressure bandage for about 10 days after surgery
and is kept as quiet as possible during that time.
I use a citronella spray collar on my one noisy Cavalier rather than a
noise/shock collar that I would use on my big dogs. The collar is a good
deterent and in fact all I do is show the collar to the Cavalier and he gets
quiet. The Vets in this area will not do de-barks.
