Of course, if cavaliers were being judged on the same breed standard as a
pug, it wouldn't be a good thing. They are not being judged that way. The
judge is not comparing one breed to another. He is supposed to be awarding
the group wins to the dogs who best represent their own breeds. In other
words, he is supposed to know the breed standard for each of the toy dogs,
and award wins to the toy dogs who are the closest to their breed standards.
In the classes, you see the judges awarding the dog who is the best of
the lot. In the group ring, you will see the judges awarding the dogs who
most closely adhere to the stated breed standard. A win because you happen
to be the best that is there in the ring that day is not particularly a good
thing. A win because you represent your breed standard better than the pug
represents his is a good thing in my opinion. It is a higher standard to be
judged by in many ways. Myra
