Here goes my 'idea' I have had for 15 years. I proposed it to late Ted Eldridge (Tirvelda Farms Irish Setters) when he was VP of the AKC and he liked it, but died before he could get any steam going. What about a seperate registry entitled the Gold Registry (or Platinum or Pearl or Diamonds, whatever) with requirements of documented health tests breed appropriate, and some kind of show records for not just the dog, but also the bitch so that she could have some credentials before she started making puppies. This registry would be more expensive re: fees which would defray costs of maintaining the records for the AKC and be added to the cost of the puppies sold which would compensate the breeder a little for the costs of performing the tests. There would also be the 'snob appeal' for the buyers who would prefer their beloved pet have all these 'papers' and came from a 'Gold Registry' breeder. Obviously there would not be puppies in any pet shop as this would be a part of the rules. Peer pressure would induce the less than caring breeders to comply rather than irritating them with demands, their use of the 'Gold Registry' would be up to them so this would remove the basis for the 'they can't make me test, I don't need to, my dogs are healthy' argument. I believe that this would be a win-win for everyone, especiually the dogs. And what do all of you think? Michael Allen
