If they are the bricks with holes in them, you probably won't want them as dog run 
pavers - you are right there -
Often the mortar pops off quite easily - takes a while, but - use a hammer & tap it a 
bit - sometimes the brick breaks, sometimes it just pops off -
if it is just a chip that breaks off the brick, or the brick comes in two, you might 
still be able to use it !
How old is the house?  That might tell you something about the bricks -
Also - just a quick trip over & looking at some of the bricks up close & personal will 
tell you, too <g>
