Laura, there is a special sort of mallet that is used to chip off the mortar. There is probalby a new way to clean them and I am sure that is what the city used as Wm. was able to get the bricks already cleaned. Ours had the holes, but you can turn them on their sides if you have a smooth side. With ours, there is one smooth side and one rough side. Don't use the rough side! All the best, Susan Cochran
