When we first moved here 13 years ago, we had all grass in the backyard.
Then we divided it into halves with fencing so we could have two exercise
areas. A few years later, we divided one of the halves and put small gravel
in these two quarter sections. Gravel is awful on the coats. This year,
William managed to get some pallets of brick at low cost from where the city
was demolishing some public housing. He had scavenged plastic lumber several
years ago so he and a carpenter put a two foot wide strip of plastic lumber
decking around the edges of the two quarter areas and filled in with brick
patio areas laid in sand (no concrete). It looks really pretty and the dogs
seem to like it. So far, it seems to be helping with the coats and the
footing is better for the dogs.

William also used some of the plastic lumber to make two agility climbs for
the dogs which they totally ignore. They do like the plantation style dog
house with porch which Wm. built in case of rain. The dogs like to lie on
the porch.
Has anyone else used brick laid in sand for runs? How do you like it?

All the best,
Susan Cochran
