Well, I can answer that for myself, Gerri,
I did intend to honor the Code of Ethics until I understood the
politics behind it and found a real life (as opposed to theoretical)
problem which I couldn't solve. (In fact, I suppose I did indeed honor
it by my absence).
When I first joined CKCSC, USA, I was genuinely confused into believing
that the club had formed for an entirely different purpose. You see I
read this passage in Liz Spalding's book "Cavalier King Charles
Spaniel":
"Mrs. W. L. Lyons Brown, founder and first President of the Cavalier
King Charles Spaneil Club, U.S.A. received her first Cavalier from her
friend Lady Forwood, owner of the famed Eyeworth Cavaliers in England.
Mrs. Brown thereupon started a crusade for recognition of the Cavalier,
and in 1956 she formed the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, U.S.A."
Thus suggesting that the entire purpose of the CKCSC, USA was to
preserve the records of the breed up to recogition which was anxiously
awaited.
There are many other places (see chapter on Showing) in which Ms.
Spalding encourages AKC activities and enthuses about the time when
Cavaliers will be recognized and shown to the very best judges. I could
quote more from the part about showing in micsellaneous class but you
get my drift. I had a "dual registered" show dog......that meant I
could show in both clubs didn't it? Much to be wished for, etc.
I assumed the fracas would be straightened out....after all weren't
almost all CKCSC dogs AKC registered?
When I got my first Cavalier I was looking for my first show dog; not
my first "club". It never occured to me that it would make so very much
difference until a year or so later when it became startling clear that
this was a political mess not susceptible of easy solution.
Apparently, confusion exists as of this day as we are seeing long time
CKCSC members asking each other what is and what isn't OK to do under
the Code of Ethics. If they are still confused, then why expect others
to be more clear?
