Not necessarily. The onus is on the breeders to educate their puppy buyers
about the issue and explain why the use of AKC only dogs would be beneficial
to the breed as a whole. Articles have been and will continue to be
published in the Bulletin. It's ironic that we are now faced with the same
problem that "the 12" were faced with all those years ago - convincing the
membership that "the dreaded AKC" is not the devil incarnate. We must show
them that the fact that a dog may only be registered with the AKC is not
indicative of its worth to the breed as a whole. Accepting the AKC
registered Cavalier into the CKCSC, USA registry does not mean the end of the
Club - rather, I think that it strengthens the Club by welcoming many more
people and dogs. Our focus is different from that of the ACKCSC - we welcome
pet owners and try to provide a wide array of services that include all
Cavalier owners, not just show/breeders. In no way am I suggesting that the
Club is superior to the ACKCSC - the breed needs both. Between the two
clubs, the needs of all Cavalier owners could be met. If any of "the 12"
would like to participate in Club activities again, I think the BOD should
try to find a way to allow that to happen. No matter what we knew or thought
we knew at the time, there was no way we could have prevented the AKC from
recognizing the Cavalier. We live in the real world and it's time to make
the world of Cavaliers a more pleasant place to live.
