Hi, Winnie,
Of course you are capable of making intelligent decisions IF you are
given the right information to process. You are one of a relatively few
pet owners on this list; consider how many are not listening in to this
thread?
I am not aware of any mandatory testing in either club. There is a
suggested protocol which came from a Swedish study, but neither club has
required or even strongly suggested compliance with the protocol. If you
get a copy of the CKCSC statistics you can easily note how many dogs are
bred under age 2.
I think Kathy Yonkers may be able to more carefully explain the problem
with the study and its projected outcome. Clearly, it was only a
beginning. I inquired about the new CKCSC USA regulation about DNA
testing on dogs who were used under nine MONTHS old because it seemed to
me that this was a tremendous contradiction in terms of the stated goal
of having heart clear dogs within six months of age two.
I test all my dogs and am happy to show that to anyone who asks.
However, I don't support mandatory anything because right now we don't
have enough information on what sort of testing (and when) would make a
difference. We have one study that gives us some HOPE that we MIGHT
delay onset. Mandatory testing will in fact mask problems as far as I'm
concerned. Shopping for the "right" cardiologist and providing heart
certificates for a stud who might have had parents who both died young
of MVD (or epilepsy....or whatever) will give credibility to breeding
programs which shouldn't enjoy it.
In the end, reputable and honest breeders will show their integrity by
letting people know where they think they are in their own programs. I
support testing and do it myself; but I'm never sure what it means to
me. I don't sell my puppies based on how healthy they will be because I
simply don't KNOW. There is no way to mandate honesty. There is no way
to insure against nature's whims.
Best,
Suze
