This is simply not a valid statement, and is not based on science. As Michael has pointed out, cavaliers have changed in many ways since the days of Ann's Son. This is not just verbage...it is visible. If you can't improve on the gene pool, why then do we consult our pedigrees, and the health histories of our dogs? Why don't we just throw them all out in the back yard and let them breed at will? Every time a breeder chooses a stud dog, that breeder is attempting to improve on something by the combination of DNA and genetics. Sometimes, it works and the breeder gets what he or she was after, and sometimes it doesn't. There are many factors to be considered. Some of us don't want to ship our bitches clear across the US for breeding. Sometimes we are looking closer to home for that elusive, fully tested boy who is known to produce his pretty head. Sometimes a breeder can't afford to pay the $1500 that is being charged for stud service plus the close to $400 to ship the bitch, but they would be able to drive a full day to get their girl bred to a dog who is closer and still meets the requirements for your breeding program. Every cavalier brings to the table it's own specific combination of DNA, and it is the ability to increase the combinations that may sometime influence the good health of the breed. By cutting down on the combinations that a breeder can pursue, you have effectively cut down on the genetic diversity that should be the goal of every breeder. Myra
