I had the hips of Ch. Roycroft Top Notch (Lenny) xrayed at 9 or 10 months of age--or around there. His growth plates were obviously NOT closed! I took one look and said "looks like he has a lot of growing left to do"--I was thankful because he was still very small at the time. And he did grow! Now at almost 2 years of age, he is still small but definitely over 12 inches tall. My Contract stipulates that I prefer they be altered by 4 months of age or after 12 months of age. I also have a heavy damage clause should the dog accidentally or purposefully be bred. So far no one has paid a single bit of attention to what my contract says. They all get their dogs altered when their vet says--6 months for girls, 5 or 6 months for boys. That is one thing to remember--no matter how much experience a breeder has, to most pet owners the vet is the authority--the vet is always right.
