> Why by 4 mos or after 12 mos? Mainly, I don't understand the 4 mos. All the studies I have show the most health benefits come before their hormones start revving up. The other health benefits are more for later in life. Since so many girls and boys are sexually mature by 6 months of age, I feel certain their hormones had to rev up for awhile before they became sexually mature, so spaying at 6 months of age seems too late for the greatest health benefits. The greatest health benefits came when neutered at 8-10 weeks of age--I extend it to 4 months of age.
I do believe staying whole has it's own health benefits as well. And I do know dogs neutered before their growth plates close do look different when mature. So I suggest they do it before 4 months or after 12 months of age. Not that anyone listens! I wish people were more responsible because I believe that staying whole definitely has great health benefits--it is normal for an animal to stay whole. Because so few people are responsible and even the responsible ones don't have time to always be responsible, I want all my pets to be neutered, but they may as well do it so that they get the greatest benefits they can. But they listen to their vet and do what they want anyhow.
