I went through making this decision a little over a year ago. I investigated all different kinds of flooring for months. I ended up putting sheet vinyl (one of the new congoleum type vinyls) in the kitchen area where the dogs go out the back door and ceramic tile in theirs, and ours, living area. The ceramic tile is MUCH easier to clean and keep clean than the vinyl. I went with a dark grout for the tile and love it. I'm planning on doing the rest of the house in ceramic tile and eventually replacing the vinyl (which was almost as expensive as having the tile put it) with ceramic.
At first, staining the concrete seemed like a good option. My drawback to that is the time it takes. Even though we are on a concrete slab, they would still put a skim coat over the top, then stain it, then a sealcoat which meant we had to stay off the floor for at least a week. I wasn't willing to make that sacrifice. The ceramic tile was laid down in one day, grouted the next. We were back in the room within 48 hours. Of course, the vinyl has no time to stay off of it once put down.
