I think that I would have thought differently about co-owns if I had known
more people who had paid a modest purchase price and a puppy back. The ones
that I know personally are purchased for $1500-$3000 with entire litters,
(even every litter the bitch ever produces) halves of litters and
occasionally only one puppy back. When we first went looking for our first
show girl....half of the breeders we approached were downright mean, and the
other half were asking as much as $2500 and entire litters back on the puppy
bitch. This was over five years ago. At that time, we promised ourselves
two things: First, that we would treat everybody who approached us about
puppies with the same courtesy that we would have liked to have been
treated, and secondly, that we wouldn't ever require someone to give us
puppies back as part of the purchase price. We turned to the UK, and felt
like we had died and gone to heaven. Not only were they ALL polite and
pleasant, even if they didn't have a puppy to sell us, but the prices were
reasonable and breeders were extremely knowledgable. We bought our first
show bitch, AKC Champion Delores Fleur Shade, a daughter of Linjato's Ace of
Base, for $850.00 plus travel expenses. This was at the same time that we
were being quoted $2500 plus several puppies back here in the US. I know
for a certainty that we have never broken either promise to ourselves, but
had I met a breeder who asked for a reasonable price and a puppy back at
that point in time, I would undoubtedly feel differently now about co-owns.
We would have bought our first bitch here in the US. Myra
