Dave, I'm sure you've heard the old saying "One man's ceiling is another man's floor." What one person may find acceptable when purchasing a Cavalier another may find totally unacceptable.
Time and time again, most of us incourage prospective people to "buy their breeder first." I think it's fair to say that most people looking for a puppy, be it show or pet, contact more than one breeder and I'm sure they get a range of prices and conditions for sale. It's then up to the buyer who they want to get a puppy from, what price they are willing to pay and what conditions they are willing to accept. More than breeders gouging people, I see people that are unwilling to wait for a puppy and agree to things that they really don't want to agree to. That's not the breeder's fault. They named their price and conditions, but they didn't force the person to buy the puppy. It's still a free interprise system and breeders are free to choose how they sell their puppies. Purchasers are similarily free to choose what they are willing to accept. I don't see a whole lot of breeders out there gleefully rubbing their hands together and mumbling, "Who can I take advantage of this time?!" Each breeder charges what they charge and stipulates what they stipulate and it's up to each buyer to decide if they want to meet that mark. If someone doesn't want to co-own a show potential puppy with a breeder or give a puppy or puppies back, then they shouldn't buy from a breeder that stipulates those things. And if they do, they shouldn't whine about it later. If a breeder charges a price that a purchaser doesn't want to pay, they are free to go somewhere else. I don't see a lot of breeders out there locking prospective buyers in their dog rooms until they ante up. JMHO, I know yours is different.
