Hi List,

I decided to throw my 2 cents with regards to HD. When I got my first Cavalier, I had
had Siberians up till then, so I was very concerned with Hips. Everyone told me not
to bother with it as it was not a problem in this breed. Several months later a
friend also got a Cavalier. He was a beautiful boy and was doing some winning in the
club. She used him on a bitch of another friend for a puppy back. When he was about
3 years old he started limping and crying out and not being very active. She took him
into the vets. This boy not only had HD, but it was so bad he needed surgery almost
immediately. While she was at it she had the puppy checked out, who was about 7
months old. She also had severe HD and eventually had to have surgery also. So don't
think it can't happen in this breed. When I was breeding before they were 2 years old
(not before 18 months) I would have a prelim done and sent in before I would breed my
girl.

Would I breed to a dog who had not been checked, is a question I struggle with a lot.
However, if I know the lines and the offspring of a dog and the off spring have been
checked then yes I will use a certain dog, if he will give what I need to my line.
