Testing should be done on all dogs who are used for breeding. Most other
breeds do testing as well. Most good ethical breeders will do testing. Most
good breeders will also breed in order to produce BETTER than what they
started with. These breeders also study bloodlines in order to produce
better. Certification of testing , and proof of results on dogs used for
breeding should be available to breeders who want to use these dogs..how else
can we make good down the road decisions, other than "looking" at the
longevity and quality of life of said dogs get. Both clubs have good points
and showing in both clubs has it's advantages. We can only make these types
of documentation available to breeders in the hope that they will do their
homework and make good choices. We can supply these papers to our pet buyers
in the hope that they will buy from good breeders and not puppy millers. The
amount of testing on any particular dog could be endless (if you checked for
every possible defect) In which case we can all hang up our whelping boxes
and go get stuffed toys. Test , yes, document results yes...make these
results available to those of us who care and will use it...But do not throw
away good AKC only dogs in the process That seems so simple. We cannot
CONTROL what everyone out there does when they breed their dogs. But we can ,
test, show results, and have the option to breed to good dogs in both clubs.
Just like we have the option to not sell to people we feel unsuitable or
breed to unsuitable dogs.
If you have to pay a little extra to do this ..cover expences of making
documentation available, etc...so be it. We just need to know as breeders
what our choices are and act accordingly..There are always going to be "bad
apples" in the lot this is the only REAL way to help keep them in check. If
you know...don't go there.
If you don't know ask for proof..then decide if you want to go there.
