Not at all. My fondness for the CKCSC lies in my ability to exhibit my dogs
in a lovely venue and compete against 200 or 300 dogs and be judged by
specialists in the breed. I want to show my own dogs and compete against
other owners who are doing the same. This is not my business. It is a
hobby. Hobbies should be fun. In the AKC, in the NY metro area, we see
little other than professional handlers who make their living (hard earned)
by traveling to shows every weekend and staying in motels with judges in the
room next door and having drinks at the bar in the evening. Not every judge.
Not every handler. I want to sit in the ballroom of the Hilton or Sheraton
Hotel from 9 in the morning til 5 in the evening and relax and watch all the
beautiful (or not so beautiful) Cavaliers and see the excited expression of
the person taking a 1st or even a 4th with their beloved companion. I want to
go back to my nice room and get ready for dinner with friends who have the
same passion for these dogs that I do. I want to exchange ideas with other
Cavalier fanciers and not fight the traffic to get to an AKC show, rush to
unload and get my dog out of the crate and onto the grass to stand and bake
in the hot sun for a total of 3 minutes. Sometimes the winner is a pro
handler and sometimes I am delighted to walk away with the ribbons. But
thrilled....not really. I am thinking how many more wins do I need to be
finished so I don't have to do this again. Believe me the temptation to hire
a professional who can finish my dogs quicker than I can looks better all the
time.
There are lovely dogs in the AKC as well as in the CKCSC. And if the ACKSC
had a show every month and insisted on owner handlers as well, I am sure I
would be there.
We all have our reasons for belonging to one club or the other....or both.
So Susan, I respectfully disagree with your assessment of members motives for
involvement in a very worthy organization, as well as your predictions for
the demise of the old Club.
