>Are these teeth cleanings accompanied by antibotics? I had always heard it >recommended that Cavaliers have a course of antirobe for several days prior >to and for several more days after any dental procedure.
>Jackie Hi Jackie, I always use Antirobe before and after teeth cleaning. Not just with dogs with murmurs. The tarter that is scaled off is loaded with bacteria. The gums are always made to bleed in the teeth cleaning process no matter how carefully done. Bacteria floods into the blood stream. The danger may be more significant with a murmur, however, I've been told by cardiologists that that isn't proven. Gum disease is caused by the bacteria that is under the gum line not the bacteria on the part of the tooth that shows. Cleaning without anesthetics, as Susan said, does not allow the teeth to be cleaned under the gum line therefore it would do nothing to prevent gum disease.
