Just as confirmation of the "small scratches theory" on unpolished teeth that
have been cleaned by scaling, my human dentist told me the same thing a few
years ago when I asked why she always polished my teeth with that nasty
gritty stuff after any scaling of my teeth when they were cleaned.  I must
admit, I rarely gnaw on raw bones or bite through inch thick hard biscuits
either <G>.  Maybe those kinds of chews help polish our dog's teeth.
