Hi Jackie,
This type of cleaning is not for dogs with gingivitis or any type of
peridontal disease. It is far less invasive as they do not clean up under
the gum line. Antibacterial solution (the same type that vets use) is used,
but antibiotics are not given. I have heard of
using a short course of antibiotics (the day prior, the day of and the day
after) for Cavaliers who are having their teeth cleaned using general
anesthesia, but only for those with murmurs. I know that it is
recommended that people who have heart murmurs or who have medical implanted
devices of any sort (artificial joints, breast implants etc.)take a short
course of antibiotics prior to having any invasive dental procedures. I do
know that Dr. Michael Lesser, a board certified cardiologist who
participates in CKCSC, USA Health Fairs for COTW, has had the teeth of his
own two Cavaliers cleaned without the use of anesthesia by the same person
that I use.

All the best,
Susan
