I cannot speak to any scenario other than what took place when I had
Anethesia free cleaning on my dogs and cats in my home, and in this
instance, the instuments were sterilized after each use. I know this because
I was there the entire time.

Like Laura, I believe my vet bases his decisions on what is best for his
client's pets. If he chooses to offer anesthesia free cleaning to his
clients, it is because he feels that it poses fewer risks and offers a less
invasive procedure. My vet practices in a very upscale area and very few of
his clients are overly cost concsious. There are a few clients who are more
price sensitive or who have large multiple pet households like myself, but
my vet would never take a chance on a pet's health just to offer a less
expensive service. The same is true of his partner. He offers this service
because he believes it to be a viable alternative with fewer inherent risks
for many, but not all, of his client's pets. There are risks associated with
any medical procedure. These risks may go up or down based upon many
variables such as the age and overall health of the pet, the conditons, the
training and technique of the person preforming the proceedure, but risk
cannot ever be eliminated entirely. The risks of any procedure SOAR anytime
any time an animal (or human) must be put under general anethesia.
Personally, I am far more comfortable with having my dogs teeth cleaned
without their being subjected to anesthesia. Of course, everyone is entitled
to use the method that best suits their own comfort level.

All the best,
Susan V.
