Hi, Susan,
Of course you are right if the arthritis is in the socket. Though I do
wonder if a well fit socket would still suffer arthritis in old age to
some extent? However......arthritis anywhere in the back assembly would
be painful. I'm mindful of how hard it is to diagnose some lameness
issues in horses. (We use local blocks to isolate the pain to diagnose
it). Hip displasia is easily diagnosed on xray for sure; but only the
owner of a painful dog would know if it was the hip socket and not the
back vertebrae or other joint pain.

I'm just saying that if one sees a painful dog, one cannot assume hip
displasia.

Best,

Suze

Arthritis is a part of HD. How can you separate the two?? The ill-fitting
joint causes the ball of the hip to flatten and grind against the socket.
This sets up an arthritic condition which is the inflammation of the joint.
Arthritis and HD go "hand in hand".

All the best,
Susan Cochran

I think if you would talk to a geneticist they would think it quite odd

to

find some breeders so concerned about RD in a breed such as the
Cavalier--which doesn't go blind from it--and only mildly (or not at

all)

concerned about hip dysplasia which does cause pain in most dogs at some
point in life and can be excrutiatingly painful and crippling.

Laura Lang

Sorry Laura........but I find this a generalizing statement regarding MOST
dogs (I took this to mean cavaliers) being in pain at some point in life
due

to HD.
I don't share your opinion about this and want people on the list hoping
to

learn more to know...........there are definately TWO schools of thought
as

to the debilitating issue of HD in cavaliers.
Just as in humans.......Arthritis is more of a culprit for pain and
stiffness in the joints than HD I think.

I think disability from HD in cavaliers is too overestimated.

I agree about auto-immune problems.......they are on the rise and greatly
outnumber crippled cavaliers.
