Hi, Laura,
IBD is specifically the diseases "Ulcerative Colitis" and "Chron's
Disease", which, in humans are of genetic and unknown etiology. They
are differentiated from irritable bowel or other diseases in that they
are much more serious.

The difference between UC and Chron's is that one occurs ONLY in the
colon and the other (Chron's) can occur anywhere in the digestive system
between the mouth and rectum. Often, Chron's cannot be ruled out in
cases in which only the colon has been effected as Chron's colitis is
fairly common. To the best of my knowledge, they have not yet found the
mode of inheritence in IBD.

My older son has IBD, so on that subject I know a bit about things. I
suspect that it is the same in dogs; treatment would begin with a sulfa
based drug and perhaps metronidazole when flare ups occur.

Now, my Sheltie started life with an irritable bowel problem, which
resolved after changing food and lifestyle. I am sure that there are
dogs who have IBD, however, I have never personally known of one. Do you
know of Cavaiers with IBD?

Best,

Suze

IBD is inflammatory bowel disease,
colitis, diarrhea from
time to time--whatever you want to call it.
