A couple of other possibilities I've seen that could be the cause of the lockups include the following:

1. a bum power supply - If the Dell you're working on is like a lot of them, it's got a smallish PS and it may just not be providing enough power to keep timing circuits running properly. A higher wattage one might be the ticket.

2. A defective or "noisy" (as in RF generated NEXT or Near End Cross TAlk) IDE cable. And -IF- it's an 80 pin model as it probably is these days, make sure it's plugged in correctly, especially if your drives are jumpered in "cable select" mode. The mother board end must be connected to the (You guessed it) motherboard and the primary drive must be connected to the "end" connector, not the middle one. Make sure there are no sharp kinks in the cable and it's not jammed up tight against any other parts with signals running through them.

The memtest suggestion was a good one, too, and I haven't seen any results of running it yet ...

Likewise the overheating mention. Just make sure the cpu fan and case fans are all running optimally.
