Morning All,

FWIW DeVry will work for me. Personally, it's closer for me but that's not
really an issue. If they can offer adequate facilities and some measure of
stability then I don't see why it wouldn't work. SAIT has been good to us
but if we can obtain a more stable place then that's better in the long run
in my books.

Another important point to consider is the abundant parking @ Boston Pizza
which too is only walking distance away: a convenient place when planning
those "after meeting meetings".

Cheers

The Executive are having to deal with future meeting locations for our
monthly
meetings. I will give you all a rundown on how things have worked and what
we
are looking at.

We have been meeting at SAIT for over a year steady and we had met at SAIT
prior to that from time to time. It all seems to have come about as a result

of Jeff Clement having some gracious bosses as he is employed by SAIT as a
teacher. The logistics of the meetings has typically been that Jeff opens
the
room with his i-button or SAIT keys that he has. If Jeff has been indisposed

we have been lucky enough to convince the cleaning staff to let us in.

Jeff's bosses have moved us around a little as we have grown and our room
requirements have grown. We have adjusted to these hiccups and hopefully
haven't confused too many people along the way. The arrangement has been
workable. We have had a few groans about people having to pay for parking on

campus but considering we have been allowed to use the facilities for free I

encouraged people to 'suck it up' or park in the surrounding neighbourhood
if
they still didn't want to pay.

This year at Convergence we were approached by someone from DeVry to
possibly
hold our meetings there. The Executive toured the DeVry facilities last
Thursday and we will be deciding whether we will be moving there or not for
future meetings. We would like your thoughts on this. Feel free to speak
candidly. I will say that we were mightily impressed by the offer.

What we have been offered is a larger room (at least seating capacity-wise)
it
will seat about 100 people. With the rate at which we have been growing, we
may need all those seats soon. The rooms are similarly equiped as SAIT,
there
is a podium WITH Ethernet, connection to an overhead LCD projector and
power.
The only real difference is that the rooms are equipped for wireless rather
than ethernet at each desk (at least for this room, there are others with
smaller seating capacities where there is ethernet to each desk). This would

not stop us from running a switch or hub if people wanted to hook up via
ethernet but in my opinion, having an Internet connection at the desks is
not
a huge deal. Yes, I am aware that some people bring laptops and 'jack-in'
during presentations. People could take advantage of the wireless networking

if you have a wireless card for your laptops. We would need to provide
DeVry's networking folks with MAC addresses to enable you to hook up. They
have offered this to us so with a little coordination and supported hardware

we'd be good to go. Parking is free, C-train access is via Franklin station
and I imagine there are bus routes nearby. Access to the campus is from
Barlow Trail which is accessible readily from Deerfoot.

To reiterate, they offered this to us at no charge. They have a number of
students interested in Linux and this could mean more memberships and
certainly more pooling of knowledgable people. The use of the room is
consistent and completely above-board. The relative distance is not that
far.
It's still almost dead center of the city, just further East. I know there
will be people who would rather stay at SAIT if we could work something out
with them and I appreciate that. This Executive, like its predecessors has
been very keen to make things better and we feel this may be one more thing
that helps us grow.

We have approached SAIT with an official request for meeting space but as of

yet they have not gotten back to us. We could likely continue to use Jeff as

a go-between and get free space through him and his bosses but the transient

nature of this weighs heavily on your Executive's minds.

We haven't decided anything yet. We may end of not having a choice, SAIT
could
come back and demand that we pay for space to meet there. With September
fast
approaching and no firm meeting place we are having to move quickly on this.

The Executive will be meeting to discuss this sometime this week.

If you would rather not voice your opinions on this list you may send them
to
me directly ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or if you would prefer you could send them to
the Secretary ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). The Executive was put in place to decide
certain matters for the group, however, we wanted you to feel that you had a

say in this regardless of what we decide.

Thanks!
