I may not need it afterall -- I'm demoing a Korg K49 controller that looks 
like it's working very well (haven't run into any issues with it yet).

OK...that's helped quite a bit. I increased the Periods/Buffer even more to 8 
and there are almost no more errors. I still get the odd:
late driver wakeup: nframes to process = 2048.

I guess that's kinda hard with a laptop...unless someone is making a decent 
external USB soundcard.
