Hi Karen, I got the feeling from your original e-mail that you were "fed up" with the demands of your job and it seems you have cause to be. Each of us have limitations. It seems that the additional task is the "one more thing" that there is just no room for in your day. As a nurse and particularly an MDS coordinator you have a very full responsibility. How well does the DON know what you are obligated to do? Are there any tasks that you can delegate? Will she listen to you if you presented a "time study" to account for just what you need to do on a daily / weekly basis? Most important, who is your back up? Do you get to take a long weekend or vacation without coming back to chaos? If some of these issues were addressed I am sure you would not feel under valued. As a professional nurse you constantly assess other's situations so you are well qualified to assess this situation and present it to management in order to develop a plan that will satisfy their "needs" and preserve your sense of well being. Good luck to you. Donna

Subject: Re: MDS Co. feeding residents!

I can see both sides of the issue. Yes, it is a good opportunity to observe resident in observation period, but I do not think that it should be required. I have yet to feed a resident who takes less than 15 to 20 minutes, since if it took less time they would have already been fed. I do too many things in the facility already because I am also the ADON, so I feed, toilet, change, work on the floor and my MDS suffers. Can't change anything right now and leave the DON in the lurch. Somehow administration needs to understand that this job is not just filling out a piece of paper and sending it to the state database.
