It would be good if you could see a CML expert at M.D. Anderson or other
major CML centers. Because there are so many new drugs there are fewer and fewer
patients going the BMT route. BMT's are sometimes an effective treatment method
but you have to be careful with what the word "cure" means regarding BMT's. Many
patients have serious complications from BMT's and there is also a high
mortality rate. If they succeed with the BMT it does not mean they are forever
free from CML because there can be relapse at any point 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 years
later. We have some in this group who relapsed as long as 15 years or more
after having a BMT and are now undergoing treatment with Gleevec and other
drugs.
