Sandy,
I am very sorry about your husband's diagnosis. You will learn to be thankful for so many things, like being in a chronic stage versus accelerated! Gleevec is a "miracle" drug compared to past treatments because of the convenience of being a pill versus IV therapy. The most recent statistics I have found are the 42 month study of people on Gleevec. You should rest easy knowing that there is only about a 4 percent per year intolerance of Gleevec. That means that people can go many years on Gleevec before they have to find another course of treatment.
The doctors are finding that with a 600 or 800 mg dose of Gleevec, patients go into a deeper remission faster. That of course is if the patient can tolerate the side effects.
There are new drugs in trial and more on the horizon. There is much hope for people to live many years with this disease. Of course, it is my hope, since my CML daughter is only 33.
If your husband does not go to a CML specialist, he needs to go to one for a second opinion. We go to OSHU in Portland, Oregon. We live in Las Vegas.
Please write me privately if I can be of any assistance.
Keep strong.
Sue
