Eric,

What are you using to try and get it out? You may have to cut it out.
Sometimes the plastic cannot withstand the pressure needed to break and old
screw joint loose. I've had to remove many a broken nipple over the years and
the plastic ones are the easiest. You need one of those mini hack saws. You
know the kind that have a 6" x 1/4" blade with 2 little pins at each end to
hold it into the "bend rod" handle?  Like this one;
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00977237000P?sid=IDx01192011x000001&kispla=00977237000P&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=33-112747568-2

You cut the plastic fitting close to the fitting, take the blade only and cut
onto the fitting, perpendicular to the threads, slowly and patiently. You need
to stop just as you get to the the threads on the female fitting. Do this
twice, the 2nd one about an eighth of a turn away from the first. Then, take a
small chisel or screwdriver and knock the smaller part, in between the cuts,
in. This should be pretty easy with plastic as it will break much easier that
a metal male fitting would. From there you should be able to either squeeze
the bigger part or try prying it. It is not too bad a chore but it does take
time and patients.

Let me know if this makes sense or not and I'll try and clear it up.

Subject: Stus-List suggestions for unscrewing a plastic hose barb
Date: Sun, 02 Dec 2012 22:13:36 -0500

A 3/4 inch plastic barbed hose adaptor is screwed into the brass thru hull gate
valve for the water inlet to the head. I want to replace the hose barb with
another one, but can't unscrew it from the thru hull valve. Teflon tape shows
on the plastic threads of the barb so I expected it would be an easy job to
unscrew it, but so far I can't move it. Tried a heat gun on low heat but
didn't help. Any ideas what to try? - obviously I don't want to break the
plastic fitting and end up with the threaded portion stuck in the gate valve.
