It's really in the details.. How is boat is stored ? Stands ? Cradle ? Trailer? If stands, were they on gravel, grass, concrete, pads ? If a cradle or trailer How is it built ? Is the keel supported on the sides so it can't move sideways? If a trailer, does it have drop legs ?
There are just under 100 boats stored at our marina for the winter. 99% are mast up, on trailers with the frame supported to reduce load on the axle and tires. Hasn't been an issue since the marina was built in the early 80s and we get strong prairie storms, winter and summer. A summer storm with plow winds went through years ago, and the boats that hadn't been launched yet were fine. On the opposite side... Last week a newbie from the coast was worried about staying at a marina that stores mast down, due to power lines.... Someone mentionthat a boat at nearby marina had their boat mast accidentally dropped onto the deck while getting being hauled for the winter... so now the newbies are scared to lower the mast due to risk of damage and perceived stress on the stick.
