Randy, I agree with what others said about glassing a plate behind after cutting out damage and beveling the edges. A couple of optional shortcuts:
Rather than making your own backing plate as suggested you can buy manufactured glass epoxy plates typically sold as G10 (mcmastercarr sells them). Just be sure to sand the surface with 80 grit to give the epoxy something to grab. 1/4 inch might be fine for this but I often us 3/8 or 1/2 inch for backing plates. You can use total boat thixo (tube with mixing nozzle) for attaching rather than making your own thickened epoxy to attach the plate. Both of these cost a bit more money but save time and hassle. I do this same thing for backing plates which I installed under all of my stations at one point. After the plate sets lay glass and epoxy in from the top overlapping existing glass.
