couldnt yet read the code, some bug reports just in case:
you shouldnt be able to select a mode if the mode is not for the
current layer type or there is no layer.
ctrl-g turn the grid on off (usefull if you want to place the grid
with a floating sprite) but the grid button doesnt change.
