It's so great to be hearing more about studies that show improvements in 
learning outcomes! I hadn't seen the work that Mike refers to, and I'm so 
excited to get Chris' paper. (This kind of work, in conjunction with the 
studies such as Stuart references are what will help "make the case" in many 
settings.) 

As an aside, I recently came across a slightly older (2007) white paper from 
CMU on Lecture Webcasting 
<http://www.cmu.edu/teaching/technology/whitepapers/LectureWebcasting_Jan07.pdf>
  that summarizes a number of past studies, most that concern student and 
instructor perception of value.  It's probably not going to teach any of us on 
this list much, and it leaves out plenty of research, but it's the kind of 
thing--relatively short, nicely laid-out--that's useful to pass on to 
instructors who are curious about the value of lecture recording for students 
and instructors.
