Agreed, I would be very interested in studying how variable speed
playback effects things.  It's important to note that the video that
people review before the midterm isn't just the latest video, but is
comprehensive.  Check out this heatmap of video watching versus video
publishing:

It shows that the two weeks before the midterm (starting feb 16 on the
x axis) there is a large amount of review style watching and right after
the midterm this stops until the final where it picks up again.  We see
different patterns with courses that have multiple points of evaluation
in them.
