Dear List: Just a general question to the list:
What is the minimum requirements for a compact mac to you? Personally, I have to have a decent keyboard (mac II style are great) and mouse, as well as a hard disk. Color (like in the color classic) is not required, and personally, I find that color takes away from the simplicity of the compact mac. A 68030 CPU, like in the mac SE/30 is nice, but it is not a requirement for me. System 7 is great, but, I don't run that on < a 68030. The Internet would be nice, because it would be very useful to download software; transferring files via floppy is a PITA, but I don't have any of my compact macs connected to the Internet currently. If I had an easier way to transfer files (say a SCSI zip drive) then I would not require the Internet. My dream is to be able to use compact flash on a compact mac because that would be the simplest and most convenient method; I don't think that there is any way to connect compact flash because it is a fairly recent invention. How do you guys copy files to and fro your compact macs? I am never surprised at the capabilities of compact macs to accept technology invented well after their prime. I have recently been gifted a Centris 650, a mac well out of the range of this list. However, even though the machine outclasses any of the compact macs, it is overkill to me. The Centris has none of the charm of a compact mac, it is big bulky and unattractive. It is much faster than my SE by its specs, but what do I care about speed? I have a modern mac that is at least 25x faster than the Centris! Compact macs are great because they are small, responsive, and intuitive. They have class that no mac since has been able to match. I am constantly amazed by their capabilities. So, I ask again, what is the minimum requirements for a compact mac to you? Is a 512k enough, or do you need a color classic? And what have you added to your compact mac to make it useful to you 15+ years after its birth?
