I was reading back in this mailing list's
archive, and noticed that folks have had a lot of success actually
DISHWASHING the motherboard. Think this might help my situation? Is
dishwashing the power board an option, or just the motherboard? What's a
good method of drying the board after washing it to prevent any further
potential damage?
I'm one of those who had good results with dishwashing. About 15 of 20
Classic II's all developed vertical bars as you describe or a
checkerboard pattern. I ran 12 of the logic boards through the dishwasher
and every one improved so that it would boot. However, most of them
produce no sound or a very weak sound.
I only washed the logic board, after removing battery and SIMMs. I ran
normal dishwasher cycle with normal soap but no dry. I left the boards to
dry for about 3 days, turning them over occasionally. Some have said you
can speed up the dry by warming in the oven.
The theory is that stuff leaks out of capacitors as they age, and the dishwasher cleans up the residue. I never suspected any other component than the logic board, because I could swap them around and the problem followed the board.
