I don't know. Like I said originally, when I first got the machine and powered up the vertical bars would appear, and then when they disappeared (usually 5-20 minutes later, sometimes afer flipping the power switch a few times) the machine would immediately go into it's startup routine and sound the bong and give me a Happy Mac proceeding as normal. Ever since I replaced the battery and cleaned it, it now goes to the vertical bars for a few minutes and then when they disappear instead of going into the startup routine the screen just stays black. I have left it black while I was away at work, and when I returned home seven hours later it was still black (yesterday). No startup bong, no nothing. Which makes me think maybe I fried the motherboard somehow while cleaning it. Like after the bars clear it's trying to find the startup code in the ROM but it's just not there (or it's been fried away to oblivion). It really kind of makes me angry and sad at the same time, because I was real careful, and all I wanted to do was temporarily replace my Plus (which I actually still used for budgeting w/ Quicken as well as other fun stuff) and I ended up paying a bloated $50 total including shipping and handling to get the thing here. And if it DOES turn out to be dead, I get to spend another similar amount to replace a replacement. :(
But to try and answer your question, I get the feeling that when the bars clear the system is trying to actually boot up. I don't think it's just losing the video signal showing the bars. I think it is proceeding beyond the "vertical bar stage" like it did originally, but instead of going to the "normal boot" stage like it did it gets stuck in a sort of limbo because the boot code has been fried or because of something else. In other words, I believe it is a hardware issue that is keeping the Classic II from proceeding with normal boot as opposed to video signal loss being the cause of the bars disappearing. when the machine DID actually boot up, I had it on for multiple days at a time with no video problems at all. Now what the problem might be, I have no idea, aside from what I've conjectured. I have little technical (hardware-related) experience with these machines, as I've never needed it until now. Which is why I've been hoping that somebody out there has had this problem before me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Byron Q.
