Assuming the information on this site is accurate, I would say it goes a long way towards answering my question.
What I mean is, (some) big corporations are able to dodge their tax responsibility, whereas "Joe in Manufacturing" from last night is probably paying every cent, because he is a little guy with no influence on Capitol Hill. The fact that he does work for the government probably puts him under additional scrutiny. The irony I see in this is that the Republicans have gained the total loyalty of businessmen like this, despite their complicity in the problem (because they typically act in direct support of these big corporations that get a free ride). They are able to portray Democrats as the high-taxes party, thus diverting blame for the problem from themselves. This corroborates my perception that staunch Republicans have been duped into voting against their own best interests.
