Well, that seems pretty boneheaded on MS's part, given the low
adoption rate of Vista and the fact that they already have an
XP --> Vista upgrade engine that could easily be adapted to
Win7.

The pricier versions of WIn7 are supposedly going to come
with an "XP mode" that runs XP in a virtual machine, sort of
like Classic Mode for the earlier versions of OS X.  I'll bet
that MS will arrange matters so that the versions of Win7 with
XP mode will have a direct upgrade path from XP and that MS
will use use this as a way to entice Win7 purchasers to buy a
more expensive version.

Chris is correct...no upgrade from xp to 7, but you can get the upgrade
price.  You just have to wipe the machine...

No, it appears that you will be able to do an in-place upgrade from Vista,
but not from XP. If you have XP, a clean install will be required.
