Wait, "install-gui gui-old" should be running Xpmac not XFree. Just verified here, it's not. Looks like I lost that functionality in porting to the 9.1 installer.
We worked through r128 quite extensively over IRC, and were unable to come up with a reason nor solution as to why it won't work in XFree during the install. Post install seems to work fine.

You could look at your XFree86.0.log in /var/log from VT2 and see if there's a module missing. I can post the module up for you on my web space, but to use it you'll need to do a network or HD install.

i would paste the log, as well as config files, but it's not exactly an
easy task, if i don't find a fix, i may do just that. from the log...
after loading the int10 module, it complains about there being no video
bios. checks isa and pci space, with nada. says i am using a flat panel
(which i am, in the ibook) but cannot determine panel dimensions.
then, when it halts with errors of unresolved symbols. the symbols are drmAgpBase drmGetInterruptFromBusID drmCtlInstHandler DRIGetDeviceInfo drmCtlUninstHandler
while loading modules, only the int10 gives any kind of error, so i
don't think missing modules are actually at fault here. any more idea's?
You don't need to post the whole thing. I was hoping the unresolved symbols was due to a lacking module in the installer image. In /tmp/Xconf, is Driver r128 or fbdev?
i don't have an Xconf anywhere on my system... which is interesting, if it should indeed be there.
You could fall back to text install for now, it needs to be tested too. I
did a few here, and there is package selection now, so that's a plus :)
oh yes, install-text is the only option i could find that would function. i am at the console, with a full working system (almost, no pppoe, since i couldn't quite figure out the dependencies and such, not that i tried for more than a minute) with no X
I keep saying I need to either buy a r128 card or a machine with r128i'd imagine it's would not be all the difficult to find one, somewhere. an old one. a pc one and flash the firmware with mac... but, i don't think it should be really get to that point...
since it seems to be such a problem child, but given the current state of
things, I'm afraid to spend money on anything but essentials (rent, food,
utilities).
unless you wanted one of these oh-so-annoying things... =)
