when i log in with either driver i can move the cursor around the console. but startx doesn't load.

using fbdev as the driver. as su, i type startx. i get a red screen and eventually a warning about using the gui as root. after a while i can pull up the menubar at the bottom, try to load anything and it just sits in the bar with the hour glass, not doing anything.
startx as a regular user i get a blue screen and only a blue screen. nothing happens. there's no menu bar, nothing. eventually i push control alt delete to get out of it.

and yes, these are default packages, only using cd1.

i guess you could say i get a decent display in X now that i put the fbdev driver to use.

what's the next step?

I am not sure who you were talking about with config someone else
posted, i couldn't find it in the archives... below are my config and
logs.

there is no mentioned of fbdev in defaultl XFconfig-4. i added it and
it died with ....

i could sort of log in with root, but it was pretty screwed up. there
was nothing and software would not run, just sit there, 'loading'
forever... loading a regular account gives a blank blue screen and
nothing else.

OK, you're loosing me. So X works or not? If you get a decent looking
display and a mouse then you're beyond the X issue. No applications or
menus, etc. is a different issue. I tweaked the packages on CD1 and when
I did a default install here I got a working KDE and Gnome from the single
CD. Did you use the default package selection?

Before I reworked that package list, I was getting a hang in starting the
Xsession due to drakfw hanging due to missing gtkdialogs, which was on the
CD but not installed, even though it's required. I added it to rpmsrate
on the RC1 release and it was installed here. I also added mozilla,
galeon and their requirements.
