I certainly accept that, and am glad of it.

But the record, for example, shows that I reported many problems with
the installer and communicated some ideas during the beta of 7.0
Not one of these was acknowledged or corrected or changed in 7.0.

Imagine my chagrin (anger might be a better word - really!) to
discover not one of them acknowledged or corrected in 7.1 either! My
only sensible reaction would be to disconnect from trying to help
MandrakeSoft along.

Yes, I know all your developer heads are down, working hard - but in
the process lots of the wider problems fall through the cracks. The
beta process is managed very poorly, if at all.

After receiving about 5 update batches now to the 7.1 tree, I still
do not have a working usable Linux at the conclusion of the installer
on either of my two pretty standard systems. I rsync the tree and
try daily. It takes 2 x 1/2 hour each day. This is a misuse of my
time and an abuse of my willing cooperation. 7.1 is still not even
ready for beta testing.

Surely this minimum can be achieved in-house in MandrakeSoft BEFORE
releasing the next updates to the tree?

For productivity, both the developers and the testers seem to need a
form of install which will run from another Linux partition from CD,
hd, or network, so that these trial installs to another partition
could be done in the background and not interrupt our other daily
activities for that machine by requiring a totally dedicated
machine. For a new install, Mandrake could supply a single floppy
image of a Linux, rather like a cut-down tomsrtbt, to run the install
from. This would be a much simpler approach than the multiple floppy
images of the present.

We will see what happens over time to this idea ...
