The installation is not viable because the locate, slocate, apropos,
whatis, etc. commands do not produce any results, and do it silently
with no helpful warning message, making people jump to the conclusion
that what they are looking for does not exist.

Here is Gael's release announcement to the Cooker List, April 26.  In
the referred web page he states the 7.1 beta-testing binaries to be
from about 40 mirror ftp/rsync sites, under mandrake-devel (ie are in
the place where the Cooker distribution usually is).  This is
confirmed by the contents of the VERSION file in the base directory:

Linux-Mandrake Hydrogen (20000421)

On the web pages he also mentions the availability of iso image(s?)
on but two sites.

in the case you wouldn't have noticed, Mandrake 7.1 is available for
download and tests.

New features include:

* Hardware

 - Enhanced USB support for modems, printers, Zip drives
