When I do this, I use oats and my own flavors (cinnamon, brown sugar,
whatever). I mix the dry ingredients together, then add enough milk to
just cover everything. I do this in a deep bowl, then heat the whole
thing until the oats are soft. I never have it spill, unless I forget
and use a smaller bowl like a cereal bowl. Next time you make oatmeal,
try putting a dinner plate under the bowl to prevent the spill from
going all over the microwave; better a plate than the glass plate in
the microwave, which is a pain to take out and put back.
