I think you will find that the change from 1260# to 1400# was the result
of 
the new changes made in the FARS,,,changed from CAR3...To re-classify
light 
airplanes to the "Normal Catagoty and Utility Catagory (Includes Aerobatic

manuvers)... Thus the Ercoupe was stronge enough to satisfy the Normal 
catagory ( NO aerobatics). up to 1400 lbs ---(and probably also for
1450.... 
as in Forney and Alon...) as these restrictions are very conservative,
from a 
safety aspect.....

The reinforcement had nothing to do with the gross weight restrictions,
but 
was a re-inforcement  needed because of hard landings.....

There were lots of changes in the manufacture of the Forney, but I don't 
think it involved strengthening of the fueslage or wings - airframe, but 
things like double fork, etc.
